A Guide to Mattress Cleaning

So you change your sheets and you wash your comforter regularly, you think you’re doing great…right? But, when was the last time you cleaned your mattress?

If you regularly change your sheets, you may be under the impression that your mattress is just as clean as the bedding. But, you’re wrong. Did you ever consider that your mattress might be the dirtiest item in your house? Between the gallons of sweat that seep into your mattress every year, and the dead skin, dust, allergens, and fungal spores that are hiding beneath the sheets, your mattress might be one of the nastiest things you own!

An Ohio State University study found that your mattress and the carpeting around your bed are the perfect places for dust mites to thrive. The amount of dead skin that a person sheds each night is enough to feed thousands of dust mites for a month. Plus, have you considered how the sweat that you produce when sleeping creates the perfect environment for fungi spores to flourish and grow right underneath you? You might as well be sleeping on a pile of allergens, mites, and fungus. So, what’s the fix?

A good, thorough cleaning of your mattress!

A good rule of thumb is that you should clean your mattress thoroughly every six months. You can hire a professional like us, at Top to Bottom Cleaning! Or, we’ll teach you how to do it yourself with the steps below:

  1. Strip your mattress and throw everything in the washing machine. We recommend washing your sheets on a hot water cycle to get rid of dust mites.

  2. Next, grab your vacuum cleaner and vacuum your entire mattress-sides and crevices included!

  3. Now that we have a blank surface, we can take care of any existing stains on the mattress. Mix some plain dish soap with water, and dab the foamy part on the stain to spot clean. Ensure that you don’t saturate the mattress with water, but blot the stain repeatedly to break it down. If it’s a stubborn stain, you may need to invest in an enzyme cleaner to lift it out.

  4. Once the stains are out, it’s time to apply baking soda. Baking soda will rid the mattress of odors and absorb any remaining moisture from the fabric. Sprinkle baking soda all over the surface of your mattress and leave it to work it’s magic for several hours.

  5. Once the baking soda has sat for a few hours, or overnight if you choose, (I like to do this on a Friday morning before work) it’s time to vacuum it up!

  6. Once your mattress is vacuumed and clean, it’s time to put your fresh bedding back on your bed and enjoy the peace of mind.
